The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will undoubtedly wrap up filming despite the ongoing writer's strike, but many domestic projects are in an uncertain state. When almost everyone in the Writers Guild of America voted to strike in mid-April over worries about streaming media residuals, which the group claimed reduced the typical writer's income, the strike was first reported to be imminent. The prohibition of studios employing artificial intelligence for purposes other than research and idea development is the other significant problem brought up.
After failed negotiations, the WGA went on strike officially on May 2. This uncertainty affected numerous shows that had recently been renewed or were now in production. One such project is The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a Prime Video release, which Variety has now verified will wrap up filming in the UK towards the end of May, about six months after it initially started. The showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are effectively kept off set because they are not allowed to assist in any writing-related tasks, which is a significant limitation.
Although it may be disappointing to learn that the showrunners of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 won't have any creative control over the remaining production, the news that filming will wrap up in less than three weeks should nevertheless be encouraging. Despite beginning in October of last year, the project has had numerous challenges, including a horse dying while filming, an electrical fire starting on set, and Berkshire neighbours raising worries about potential harm to the surrounding Swinley Forest.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 is now one of the few projects that has been verified to not experience any significant delays as a result of the writer's strike because filming is expected to wrap up soon. Due in large part to the fact that the scripts for the upcoming episode of the Game of Thrones prequel show have been finished "for some time," HBO's House of the Dragon season 2 will continue to be produced. According to reports, AMC will move through without any problems with its Anne Rice series and Walking Dead spinoffs.
The WGA writer's strike has nevertheless started to have an impact on some productions, with all late-night talk shows going on break as well as Yellowjackets season 3, Big Mouth season 8, and Cobra Kai season 6, all of which saw their creators participate in picketing and fueling rumours of delays. It will be interesting to observe how the strike may effect the future of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power given that the Prime Video show is anticipated to last at least five seasons.
